About Laser Turp Surgery

Laser assisted transurethral resection of prostate, commonly known as Laser TURP, is one of the surgical options available to the urologists for the treatment of men with benign prostate enlargement (BPE).

BPE is a benign condition that occurs as men get older; can cause bothersome urinary tract problems. Treatment of BPE has come a long way since Hugh Hampton Young performed the first cold-cut prostatic punch surgery in 1909. Open prostatectomy, though outcome is excellent due to the removal of excess prostatic tissue, over the years has been replaced by a more minimally invasive approach known as the transurethral resection of prostate (TURP). It remained a gold standard until the late 1990s, when urologists began to utilize laser technology for the treatment of BPE. Laser assisted TURP comes with many advantages as compared to conventional TURP. Few of the significant benefits are: No blood loss, faster recovery, ideal for patients undertaking blood thinning agents, shorter hospital stay and so on.
