Kidney cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting males in the middle age group, especially those who sm ke. Smoking is one of the most important causative factors. These cancers are best treated with surgery wherein the cancer bearing organ is removed along with the cancer and the surrounding layers so that cancer recurrence can be reduced maximally. However this also means that the unaffected portion of the kidney also has to be sacrificed with the cancer. Nephron sparing surgery allows the surgeon to remove the cancer bearing area of the kidney while at the same time preserving the rest of the unaffected parts of the kidney thereby preserving as many functioning nephron units as possible.

This surgery can be performed by laparoscopic approach which the additional advantage of rapid recovery and rapid return to work. At the Fortis Kidney Hospital we have performed many such procedures to remove the cancer bearing tissue and at the same time preserve the rest of the kidney.

This surgery can however be only offered to those who present in the earlier stage of the cancer, and the tumor has as yet not affected the main blood supply of the kidney. These cancers can easily be detected in early stage by a simple abdominal ultrasound evaluation and can routinely be done in individuals above the age of 50 years. After the tumor is suspected then the surgeon will usually advise for CT angiography to assess the relationship of the blood vessels of the kidney with the tumor. Once it is detected that the cancer is in the early stage and has not yet attacked the main central vessels then the uro-surgeon can decide in favor of removal of the main tumor while at the same time preserve the rest of the nephrons.

This surgery performed by minimal invasive technique at Fortis Kidney hospitals. The patient needs to be admitted for five to six days and can return to work after two weeks of rest.

This treatment can be offered to most patients if the cancer is detected in the early stage of the disease and therefore the importance of regular kidney check up and ultrasound examination after age pf 50 years.

Fortis Hospitals & Kidney Institute performs Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy to remove renal tumor from a 53 year old man Kolkata, April, 2010: Patients with small renal tumors can now benefit from Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy with preserved renal functions. Fortis Hospitals and Kidney Institute performed a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy where only the tumor bearing portion of the kidney was removed preserving the remaining normal functions of the kidney. A team of experts led by Dr. Shivaji Basu, Consultant Uro-Onco Surgeon, Fortis Hospitals & Kidney Institute performed this surgery on a 53 year old man. While undergoing an annual health check up Mr. Bose (name changed) was found to have blood in his urine. Doctors suggested him to go for a thorough check up where an ultra sonogram was done and it showed a presence of solid mass (tumor) of 2.5 cm in one of his kidneys. A further CT scan confirmed that the tumor was likely to be malignant but considering the small size was at its initial stage only. Dr. Shivaji Basu said, “The tumor was small in size and was suitable for a nephron sparing surgery, which means only the tumor bearing part of the kidney needs to be removed and the remaining portion of the kidney is preserved retaining the normal kidney functions. This particular treatment is different to the traditional method where the whole of the kidney is removed.” “We conducted a partial removal of kidney through laparoscopic or keyhole technique. This is a minimally invasive procedure where the invasion is less, blood loss is minimal, the patient experiences less pain and post surgery recovery is phenomenally faster. The patient can resume back to his or her work within just two weeks of surgery” added Dr. Shivaji Basu. Mr. Bose’s surgery was a successful one and he went home back within 4 days of his surgery. The final biopsy report declared that it was an early cancer which was detected at the appropriate time and was removed completely. Now Mr. Bose is leading a completely normal and active life with normal kidney function. Partial Nephrectomy is relatively a new treatment for cancers of Kidney and the concept has been introduced in our country only about 5 – 6 years back. This technique is used for treatting early kidney cancers which are relatively smaller in size.

The Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy is further newer and is one of the most complicated laparoscopic procedures which require technical expertise and specialized equipments to perform the surgery. The advantages of laparoscopic surgery in this procedure are bestowed to the patient with early recovery and minimal body disfigurement and at the same time maintaining the goal of cancer surgery i.e. complete removal. Fortis Hospitals & Kidney Institute Kolkata is the first hospital in Eastern India to perform the Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy.

Fortis Hospitals (formerly Wockhardt Hospitals) & Kidney Institute today launched the “Guide to Cancers of Kidney” on the occasion of World Kidney Day – a day dedicated to creating increased awareness around kidney related diseases. The booklet a “Guide to understanding Different types of Kidney cancers and their causes and symptoms” was launched by noted Bengali film actress June Maliah in the presence of Dr. Aninda Chatterjee Centre Head, Dr. Shivaji Basu, Chief Urologist and Dr. R. K Gopalakrishna consultant Urologist Fortis Hospitals & Kidney Institute, Kolkata. Through this initiative Fortis Hospitals aims to create increased awareness of Kidney cancers and focus towards noting the symptoms and acting upon it as early as possible.

Speaking at the occasion Dr. Shivaji Basu, Chief Urologist, Fortis Hospitals Kolkata said, “Kidney cancer cases have risen phenomenally in the recent years. More people are seen to be affected of kidney cancer. Lack of awareness is the primary cause of the alarming increase in the number of kidney cancers in the country. If people are aware about the symptoms, a lot more lives could be saved.”

Around 208,500 new cases of kidney cancer are diagnosed in the world each year, accounting for just fewer than 2% of all cancers. Kidney cancer is usually defined as any cancer that is determined to have arisen from the kidney. It usually does not include metastatic cancer of the kidney, i.e. cancer that arose outside of the kidney and has spread to it. The two most common types of kidney cancer, reflecting their location within the kidney, are renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and urothelial cell carcinoma (UCC) of the renal pelvis. The distinction between these two types (RCC and UCC) is important because their prognosis, staging, and management, i.e. treatment (e.g. surgery, chemotherapy etc.), is different.

Presenting a talk on Kidney Cancers, Dr R K Gopalakrishna, Consultant Urologist, Fortis Hospitals Kolkata said, “It is a fact that awareness on cancer in the kidney in our country is extremely low. Our intention of launching this booklet is to increase this awareness and make people more conscious about better Kidney Care.”

“For the Last two decades Fortis Hospitals and Kidney Institute has tried to ensure adequate patient education and awareness on Kidney diseases.

The Guide to Cancers of Kidney will be available at Fortis Hospitals & Kidney Institute, Rashbehari Road and Fortis Medical Centre, Sarat Bose Road and will also be available at website for download

  • It has performed the maximum number of PCNLs (stones extracted through a small hole at the back)
  • It performs the maximum number of kidney stone as well as kidney surgeries per month with success rate at par with leading hospitals in Eastern India catering to over 50 million people.
